Meet the Artist
Janine McCray-Booker
Before she ever picked up a brush, Janine McCray-Booker spent years as a nurse — showing up in the most sacred and difficult moments of human life. She sat with patients in their pain. She celebrated their victories. She learned early that healing is not just physical. It lives in what we feel, what we express, and what we leave behind.
When Janine lost her daughter Shannan to cancer, the world got very quiet. And in that quiet, she found paint.
What began as a way to survive grief became something far greater. Every time Janine stands before a canvas, she feels Shannan with her — guiding her hand, speaking through color, alive in every bold stroke of acrylic. Painting is not just her art. It is her conversation. Her prayer. Her way of keeping her daughter’s light burning in the world.
That is what you feel when you look at her work. You are not just seeing a painting. You are receiving something — a message carried through a mother’s love, translated into color, and placed exactly where it needs to be in your life.
Her first collection features 35 original acrylic paintings. Each one is a portrait of feminine power — bold, vibrant, and unapologetically alive. Bald women who carry fire and grace. Women who have been through something and come out luminous. Women who look like strength feels.
Janine is also the author of a 10-book children’s series, the founder of Healing Art Together — a community built on the belief that creativity heals what words cannot reach — and a teaching artist who has introduced hundreds of people to the transformative power of painting for the first time.
Her work has been exhibited across Long Island, graced the cover of a published book, and found its way into the homes and hearts of friends, family, and community — who say the same thing when they see it for the first time — “I felt seen.”
Published Book
Janine’s art was selected to grace the cover of Popular Spaces in Post-Apartheid Literature: Race, Gender, and Liberation by Nafeesa T. Nichols, published by Bloomsbury — one of the world’s leading academic publishers. When words need a powerful image to carry their weight, they turn to JLisette Art.

"When I paint, I am not alone. Shannan is with me in every color, every stroke, every canvas. This art is our conversation."
— Janine McCray-Booker, JLisette Art
"My birthday portrait was not just art — it captured emotion, presence, and a sense of being truly seen. That is a rare gift. Her ability to turn pain into beauty is not only inspiring, it's transformative. Thank you for sharing your light through your art."
— Evelyn Lewis
"What makes Janine's work so powerful is the truth behind it. It's not imagined emotion — it comes from deep love and loss. Knowing the journey firsthand, I can say each of her pieces holds a sincerity and depth that's impossible to replicate."
— Rhonda Branch
"JLisette's art has been such a source of beauty and inspiration. Her work captures the strength and vulnerability, the fire and sassiness, the regal and the divine in all women. There was no better choice for the cover of my own book — a testament to the way we must sometimes look within to find our light, our peace, our beauty and our power."
— Nafeesa T. Nichols
"The beautiful artwork you presented to me — I love it. It reminds me of the serenity I feel when engaging with the Freeport Roosevelt NAACP Youth. The picture you prepared for me truly captured the essence of what my soul is like when working with youth. I appreciate the compassion, the understanding, and the care you have for everyone around you. I pray the world will see through your art the many forms of expression you use to connect with what is going on emotionally, physically, and spiritually in the world."
— Allois Douse
"JLisette's art holds a profound place in my heart. The beauty she captures reflects not only her immense talent but the symbolism of her experience — particularly the emotions tied to the loss of her daughter. Each brushstroke tells a story of love, remembrance, and healing. I am honored to have received a portrait from her — a breathtaking piece that showcases her ability to channel grief into beauty. Through her art, JLisette invites us to acknowledge our struggles while celebrating the strength that arises from them."
— Bobbi Bernadino
"Having personally witnessed JLisette's growth from the early inception to where she is now, I can say her artwork is raw, honest, and inspiring. I have two pieces that stop people in their tracks when they see them. I am in awe of her strength and creativity. Bravo!"
